Instructor Certification Program (ICP)

How do I enrol?

Enrollment for micro-credentials

You can self-enrol in any of the ICP micro-credentials through the Canvas course catalog*.

*Note that micro-credentials must be taken in the order they are listed in the Micro-credentials & Course Flexibility section.

Enrollment for full courses

You can apply to the ICP program through Admissions. Complete the application form and submit it in person to the Registrar’s Office or email it to registration@lethbridgecollege.ca. Once the application is received, the Registrar’s Office processes the request. The application fee and the tuition deposit are both waived. Now you are enrolled in the program!

Between May and July, the individual courses will open for registration for the upcoming year. You can log onto Self Service and register yourself into courses.

What is the Instructor Certification Program?

The Instructor Certification Program (ICP) is designed to enrich the depth of instructor knowledge and skills in the practice of teaching and learning at Lethbridge College. ICP courses allow instructors to collaborate with others across the college to learn from and share with each other. It is expected that instructors complete the ICP program within their first five years of instruction at the college.

Program outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the ability to use and evaluate a variety of instructional strategies that integrate effective use of technology to support the evolving and differential learning needs of students.
  2. Incorporate current adult learning theories and principles in curriculum design, instructional strategies, and assessment.
  3. Develop a variety of assessment tasks that provide evidence of student’s ability to demonstrate skills, understand and apply concepts and resolve issues.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of diversity in higher education and its impact on the teaching and learning process.
  5. Develop and demonstrate effective leadership skills relevant to post-secondary environment.
  6. Apply and communicate institutional policies and procedures within the context of various roles and responsibilities at Lethbridge College.
  7. Utilize necessary skills to develop and analyze curriculum at the course and program level.
  8. Explore trends, and future directions related to teaching and learning.
  9. Determine strategies for engaging in research projects including SOTL and/or applied research.

What is PLAR?

Do you have previous extended experience or knowledge in a specific area of the ICP? In this case, you are able to apply for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). This means you can provide evidence of learning and receive course credit without taking the course. You must provide evidence that you have achieved 75-80% of a course’s outcomes.

Micro-credentials & Course Flexibility

As we have continued to strive to provide flexibility for ICP courses, you may notice that four of them (1151, 1152, 1154 and 1156) use micro-credentials as their primary learning source. You do not have to be currently enrolled in any of these courses to take the micro-credentials, you can take them any time and even finish these courses on a schedule that works best for you! Simply go to our Canvas Catalogue page and enroll! The next time the ICP course you need to finish is offered, register for it, and let the instructor know that you are done all the required micro-credentials, and you’ll receive credit for the course!

Here is an example:

It’s summer and Paige only needs to finish ICP-1154 to complete the ICP program, but looking at the ICP schedule she notes that ICP-1154 isn’t being offered until the next Spring! She has plenty of time to work on ICP right now, so she decided to complete the micro-credentials for ICP 1154 now. Paige enrolls in the required micro-credentials and finishes them over the summer months. Then, when the next spring comes around, she enrolls in ICP-1154, emails the instructor to communicate that she’s finished the required micro-credentials and receives credit for the course! All done!

FAQ

What about ICP-1153 and ICP-1155?

ICP 1153 and ICP 1155 are blended courses, which require face-to-face sessions during the semester, therefore they do not have micro-credentials to complete like the other courses.

How do I ensure I get credit for my ICP course once my micro-credentials are done?

Ensure you register for your ICP course at the next offering, then contact the instructor to let them know you’ve completed the micro-credential requirements. They will check for completion, if you’ve completed them as required, you’ll receive credit for the course at the end of the semester.

What if I only finish 2 of the 4 required micro-credentials? What then?

You can register for the ICP course they are part of and finish the other 2 required micro-credentials. You do not have to redo any work already completed. When done the required micro-credentials, you will receive credit for the course.

Will I receive feedback on my assignments in the micro-credentials when taking them outside of when a course is running?

CTLI has people assigned to each micro-credential, you will receive feedback on your assignment, generally within 14 days of submitting your assignment, as per Lethbridge College policy.

Why aren’t ICP course offered more often?

We have a limited amount of people to facilitate the courses we offer, we have also noticed that if we offer too many courses at once there is low enrollment which can take away from some aspects of the course.
