New Instructor Orientation Program (NIOP): Helping new instructors thrive at Lethbridge Polytechnic
Congratulations on becoming an instructor at Lethbridge Polytechnic! We’re so excited to have you join the team and help set you up for success.
Along with the excitement you’re probably feeling, you may also be wrestling with nerves about what to expect in your new role and how you can best prepare.
This is exactly where NIOP — our New Instructor Orientation Program — can help you thrive.

The New Instructor Orientation Program (NIOP) is an immersive orientation that equips new and new-to-Lethbridge Polytechnic instructors like you with helpful teaching and learning tools to help you excel in your new role.
Throughout the program, you’ll explore strategies for:
- lesson planning
- engaging with students
- personalizing your teaching style
- using Canvas (our learning management system)
NIOP is mandatory for every new instructor at Lethbridge Polytechnic, and it prepares you to step confidently into instructing and to create the very best learning experiences for your students.
NIOP 2024 is scheduled for eight full days, from Tuesday, August 6, to Thursday, August 15.
You’ll have many breaks throughout each day to help you rest and recharge.
How to make the most of your NIOP experience
Though training is the main purpose of NIOP, there’s so much more available to faculty who attend. When you jump in to participate, you make important networking connections, build community, and start making Lethbridge Polytechnic your home, so you feel comfortable and ready to take on the new semester.
- Build mentorship relationships. NIOP gives you the chance to connect with other instructors, both new and experienced, so you can start to foster community together. Many new instructors even build long-term mentorship relationships that benefit them for years to come.
- Participate in Personal Winter Counts with Indigenous Services. A pictorial calendar traditionally painted on a buffalo hide, Winter Counts were once used by the Blackfoot People to keep track of time. Indigenous Services will attend NIOP and offer new instructors the chance to craft their own personal Winter Counts.
- Access support today, tomorrow and beyond. While NIOP only lasts for two weeks, we’ll connect you with supports you can depend on throughout your time here at Lethbridge Polytechnic. From integrated and accessible supports to professional development opportunities, CTLI is here to help you succeed.
- Get a head-start on NIOP with Canvas Essentials. If you have the time before NIOP begins, check out our free, self-paced course on our learning management system (LMS), Canvas. Canvas is where you will upload your learning materials and interact online with your students. Canvas Essentials will help you discover how to deliver your students the most dynamic, engaging learning experiences possible.
We can’t wait to meet you
We are so excited to meet you in person at NIOP this year!
