Camp Horizon 101: The PD event you should block off your calendar for

We’ve had a lot of folks asking about this year’s Camp Horizon event, and so, here’s the low-down of what it is, why it’s so great to attend, and how you can get involved!

What is Camp Horizon?

Running for its third consecutive year, Camp Horizon is a two-day professional development event for all faculty and staff at Lethbridge College.

The theme of this year’s event is balance matters.

According to the event organizing team, this theme reflects the end-of-the-academic-year opportunity for instructors to pivot from academics and balance development with wellness sessions and (weather-permitting) outdoor activities. It’s a time when staff and faculty can take a moment to unwind, reflect on the year, and connect with colleagues while participating in professional development related to teaching and learning.

Why should you care?

  • learn about the latest innovations in teaching excellence
  • celebrate instructor successes across the college
  • reflect on the year’s journey in teaching and learning
  • relax and socialize with peers
  • foster interdepartmental networking
  • build community
  • recharge at an informal professional retreat
  • enjoy a tasty (and free!) lunch

Participant survey feedback from last year’s Camp Horizon was positive, with many appreciating the time to reconnect with colleagues, share skills, and learn something new. The variety of sessions offered was a particular hit, with presenters from across the college showcasing their knowledge in various ways including a plant-identification coulee walk, beading, music sessions and workshops. There was also disc-golf and yoga!

If you didn’t get a chance to attend last year’s event—and even if you did— then you won’t want to miss this year’s rendition.

What’s new this year?

Camp Horizon will be held on May 14 & 15. Location(s) TBD.

This year, event organizers are sticking with the same popular format of a multitude of topics and presentation styles (think informal chats, outdoor events, showcases, hands-on workshops, and more) with an emphasis on engagement and tangible takeaways—including useful strategies that instructors can apply in their work and practice and connect to the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

Building on last year’s success, CTLI is committed to making this year’s Camp Horizon memorable by including:

  • asynchronous sessions to ensure everyone can experience something
  • a keynote speaker with unique insights and experience in teaching, learning, and wellness
  • opportunities to network, explore, and participate in CTLI-supported inter-disciplinary projects over the coming school year
  • involvement from all LC employees, not just instructors
