Guiding question: How can states of matter and other physical properties be explained using the particle model of matter?
Learning outcome: Students investigate the particle model of matter in relation to the physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases.
Compétences et procédures :
- Measure the mass of solids and liquids using a balance scale and SI units
- Measure the volume of liquids using appropriate instruments and SI units
- Directly compare the density of liquids
- Practice safe and appropriate use of materials, tools, and equipment

Preparation
- Watch the accompanying videos pertaining to density, volume, and mass.
- Make sure that each station has the required materials to conduct the activity.
- Make sure that the scales have power.
- Check that the valves on each pipe are turned off prior to adding liquids.
- Make sure that each pipe is cleaned prior to the activity.

- Instruct students to use the measuring cup to measure each liquid to the desired volume. Have students record the volume in a workbook.

- Prior to adding the liquid to each pipe, students should use the scales to measure the mass of each pipe and then, after adding the liquid, replace the filled pipe on the scale to get the combined mass of the pipe and liquid. Students then subtract the mass of the empty pipe from the combined mass to get the mass of the liquid. Alternatively, students can measure the mass of the measuring cup before and after adding the liquid to get the mass of the liquid. Students then record the mass of each liquid.

- Using the known mass and volume of each liquid, students can now calculate and compare the density of each liquid.

Written assessment
- Check students’ workbooks to ensure that their calculations are done correctly.

Performance task/observation
- Observe students as they work through the activity. Make sure that students are accurate in their measurement of volume, calculating mass, and density.

Extension
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Create a density tower.
