Career & Personal Development

Career and Personal Development involves setting academic, career, and wellness goals and striving to achieve them. Developing this competency includes identifying personal strengths and abilities and using them in various settings. Implementing strategies such as self-reflection, goal setting and goal meeting is also a fundamental aspect of career and personal development.

Each core competency is divided into three levels:

  • Involved students know the indicator or the criteria for demonstrating it. They can talk about it, write about it, describe it or explain it.
  • Engaged students can perform or demonstrate the indicator or criteria; that is, they can do it.
  • Leading students are innovating, extending, transforming, showing initiative, integrating, or collaborating.

Examples

What are some specific ways this competency might be demonstrated?

  • Acknowledges to instructor that setting goals is a good idea
  • Reads a time management handout from the Learning Café
  • Tells a friend their New Year’s resolution is to eat better and get more sleep
  • Refers a friend to campus learning and health support services
  • Feels concerned that a poor mark on a test may affect their grade in a course
  • Checks cover letter and résumé for career advisor’s comments

  • Knows a due date is approaching and chooses to work on assignment rather than socialize
  • Enrols in an exercise class at the gym
  • Completes an employment skills workshop
  • Reviews an exam to see where mistakes were made and plans to get tutored in those areas
  • Changes part of their project after feedback from a peer

What are some specific ways this competency might be demonstrated?

  • Watches a video on LinkedIn Learning to learn video editing
  • Takes exercise breaks when studying and maintains progress in other courses while working on a major assignment
  • Attends a time management workshop to learn how to use time better
  • Speaks to the Learning Café staff about adding an evening study skills session for mature students
  • Seeks research support from library staff after receiving a poor grade on a research paper
  • Meets with Learning Café staff after completing the first draft of their paper, incorporates suggestions for improvement and uses those strategies on future assignments
