Frequently asked questions
Am I required to attend the entire orientation? Yes. These two weeks are used to introduce you to relevant people, departments, culture, and expectations at the College. You’ll learn information about the teaching skills and procedures you’ll need to begin the semester as an Instructor at Lethbridge College.
What happens if I miss part of the orientation? Please let us and your Associate Dean know ASAP if you are unable to attend any portion of the NIOP and we will find a way to ensure you receive one-on-one information for the workshops you’ll miss.
What is the delivery method of the NIOP? The NIOP will take place online, through CANVAS, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. There will be both synchronous and asynchronous components. We have designed this orientation to deliver the information you need, while also modelling various tools and activities you may use in your own courses.
What time does orientation start each day? As per the preliminary schedule included in your welcome package, most days will take place from 8:30-4:30. Centre Orientation day times will be determined by your Dean and Associate Dean. A detailed schedule will be sent to you soon.
What happens on the Centre Orientation days? These days are for you to get to know your specific academic Centre and orientate to your role as an Instructor. For more information, please contact your Associate Dean.
Is there anything I must do before I arrive? We will be opening some modules about Facilitating Online Learning on August 1st. Please log on to CANAVS and review these before the NIOP begins.
I heard there is an ISW: when and where do I take that? The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) is designed for face-to-face (in-person) classes and team-building. Since we are in a time of teaching that looks a bit different, we have created an alternate teaching development workshop that will replace the ISW. The new Teaching Development Workshop (TDW) focuses on teaching skills that will help you with online content (synchronous and asynchronous) and transferring content between different delivery methods.
Where do I sign on in the morning? As the NIOP approaches, everyone will sign on to CANVAS, where you will be able to connect onto the Zoom platform. There will be one or two times that you will be directed to connect to a different online platform. On those days, you will be given further direction on where and how to log on. Additionally, we will review all instructions during the first day of orientation. Below is the Zoom link where we will begin our mornings: NIOP Zoom room: https://lethbridgecollege.zoom.us/j/4033203220
Will there be breaks throughout the day? We acknowledge that there may be some ZOOM fatigue during the two-week orientation. We have scheduled many breaks throughout the day and tried to balance our synchronous and asynchronous sessions, throughout NIOP to give you time to rest and recharge.
